Why Artificial Turf Needs Extra Care
Many modern homeowners choose to install synthetic or artificial turfgrass on their properties. Artificial turf is a popular choice because it removes the need for regular lawn mowing, does not require watering, and maintains a perfectly green appearance throughout every season of the year. While fake grass can be an excellent surface for domestic pets, it functions very differently than a natural lawn.
Because a synthetic lawn lacks a living soil ecosystem underneath, it requires a completely unique cleaning protocol to stay sanitary and odor-free over the long term.
The Missing Microbiome of Synthetic Lawns
To understand why artificial turf needs extra maintenance, we have to look at how real soil handles waste material. Natural earth contains a complex, living ecosystem filled with earthworms, insects, fungi, and beneficial microbes. This intense heat retention has an immediate effect on any hidden pet waste particles trapped within the infill. The high temperatures cause the residual organic compounds to vaporize rapidly, leading to a sudden, sharp spike in localized odor that can make an entire patio area unusable.
To maintain a safe and comfortable synthetic property, homeowners must follow a strict two-step protocol: extract solid waste material immediately before it can be stepped on and flattened into the fibers, and regularly flush the entire turf area with bio-enzymatic sanitizers designed specifically to dissolve organic film on non-porous plastic surfaces.
